In a tragic incident on February 12, an 80-year-old passenger passed away at Mumbai airport after suffering a heart attack due to the unavailability of a wheelchair. The passenger, who arrived on an Air India flight from New York, collapsed after allegedly walking 1.5 km as a wheelchair was not provided.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken stringent action against Air India, imposing a hefty fine of ₹30 lakh for its failure to ensure an adequate number of wheelchairs at Mumbai airport. This violation of civil aviation requirements has led to grave consequences, prompting the regulatory body to take decisive measures.

In addition to the fine, the DGCA has issued a stern advisory to all airlines, emphasizing the critical need to maintain a sufficient supply of wheelchairs for passengers requiring assistance. This directive aims to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and underscores the paramount importance of passenger safety and convenience.

While the DGCA has taken swift action, an official statement from Air India regarding the incident and the imposed fine is still pending. The airline’s response to this regulatory action will shed further light on the steps taken to address the lapses in wheelchair provision and ensure accountability.

Despite receiving a show cause notice and an opportunity to rectify the situation, Air India failed to demonstrate compliance with civil aviation regulations. The airline’s inability to provide a wheelchair to the elderly passenger, despite his urgent need, underscores a serious lapse in operational procedures.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role airlines play in ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers, especially those with mobility issues. The aviation industry must prioritize accessibility and implement robust measures to accommodate passengers’ needs effectively.

Massey Ferguson produces one-millionth tractor https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/06/21/massey-ferguson-produces-one-millionth-tractor/ https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/06/21/massey-ferguson-produces-one-millionth-tractor/#respond Tue, 21 Jun 2022 05:01:46 +0000 http://3.39.254.188/?p=2367 This milestone coincides with the company’s 175th anniversary. Massey Ferguson has been manufacturing tractors in Beauvais, France since November 20, 1960

Duluth, GA, US – AGCO Corporation, a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of agricultural machinery and precision ag technology, celebrates the production of the one-millionth tractor at its Massey Ferguson Beauvais plant. This milestone coincides with the company’s 175th anniversary. Massey Ferguson has been manufacturing tractors in Beauvais, France since November 20, 1960.

“2022 is a year of milestone celebrations for Massey Ferguson,” said Darren Parker, vice president of Massey Ferguson, North America. “We applaud the hard work and dedication of our colleagues in Beauvais to produce our one-millionth tractor. We’re also excited to celebrate Massey Ferguson’s 175 years of straightforward, dependable equipment innovation this year. These dual milestones prove our status as agricultural problem solvers dedicated to providing the right equipment, at the right price, for individual farming operations. Our equipment, just like our customers, is Born to Farm,” Parker added.

62 years of production in Beauvais

Thierry Lhotte, vice president and managing director, Massey Ferguson EAME, and president of AGCO in France presented the one-millionth tractor produced in Beauvais – a brand-new MF 8S.305 Dyna-VT – to Thierry Aubrée, an arable farmer and contractor from the village of La Chapelle des Fougeretz in Brittany, France. “On behalf of all our employees and dealers, I want to thank our customers for their steadfast trust,” said Lhotte. The new 8S adds to Aubrée’s expanding Massey Ferguson fleet that already includes four tractors, three combines, and two large balers.

Boussad Bouaouli, vice president, manufacturing at Beauvais, emphasised employee commitment on the Beauvais MF campus development. “From 1960, there have always been people who kept the site moving, always with the right farmer-first focus to address challenges of the times and, above all, with a clear view to the future,” Bouaouli said.

It all started with the MF 825 in 1960. From then, the site grew continuously, producing iconic tractors driven by innovation, including:

  • MF 3000 Series in 1986, the first tractor with onboard electronics.
  • MF 8600 in 2008, introducing the efficient power concept, which reduces environmental impact, courtesy of the first use of SCR technology on an agricultural machine.
  • MF 8S Series in 2020, with its award-winning Protect-U concept, which features a 9.4-inch gap between the cab and the engine installation, reducing heat, noise, and vibrations being transmitted to the cab and improving cooling and performance. The MF 8S Series received the Tractor of the Year 2021, Red Dot: Product Design 2021 and Farm Machine 2022 awards.

“The Beauvais plant and our dedicated employees embody Massy Ferguson’s commitment to farmer-focused equipment solutions. This plant, named Factory of the Year 2016, represents the modern era of Massey Ferguson. This campus sets our future and new standards,” Bouaouli said.

The site has seen innovative developments in recent years, including implementation of lean manufacturing practices, expansion of the Beauvais two cab assembly line and a logistics centre, and a tractor customisation workshop. The facility produces many of the brand’s most popular tractors, including the MF 4700 M, MF 5700 M, MF 5S, MF 6S, MF 7S, MF 8S and MF 8700 S Series. Up to 100 tractors can be produced and shipped daily to dealers in more than 70 countries.

“As we hand over this one-millionth tractor, we are set to unify our sites into a single MF campus with all our departments under one roof,” Lhotte said. “This offers high flexibility and leverages the unique experiences, skills and commitment of the people who work here. This tractor milestone is our 2,500 employees’ success, including our GIMA transmissions’ Joint Venture.”

Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Sunday inaugurated the ‘Harit Pradesh Milk Producer Company’ (HPMPC), an entity owned by over 17,000 milk producers of the western Uttar Pradesh.  He complimented the farmers in the region’s seven districts for demonstrating the meaning of empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Balyan, said the Government would support such initiatives as describing HPMPC as a new cooperative in UP. This is not a company, in fact, it is a farmer organisation. There is no place for politics or corruption in it. The focus will be on such entities as they are farmers and work in the interest of farmers.”Complimenting the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for facilitating four other such entities in Uttar Pradesh – Varanasi, Amethi and Rae Bareilly and Bundelkhand for upliftment of farmers, the focus is on increasing the productivity of indigenous breeds of milch animals.

He praised milk farmers for procuring and pooling quality milk from hundreds of villages in seven districts namely Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Saharanpur, Hapur, Shamli and Bijnor. He said that since technology and transparent digital mechanism was at the core of the new entity, it would ensure better returns for the farmers along with good quality milk for consumers.

This organisation was incorporated on October 26, 2021 with the aim of procuring quality milk from its members and shareholders only. It is an initiative basis the provisions contained in the Companies Act, 2013 enabling the business enterprise to run on the mutual assistance principles similar to the cooperative principles adopted by the International Cooperative Alliance.

Harit Pradesh Milk Producer Company is the 19th such entity across nine states. In the run-up to the formal inauguration, HPMPC has already spread over 1,400 villages across seven districts namely Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Saharanpur, Hapur, Shamli and Bijnor, scaling up milk procurement as of now to 150,000 litres per day, indicating the vast size and shape of the business, weaved into a cooperative approach.

National Dairy Development Board’s (NDDB) owned subsidiary NDDB Dairy Services (NDS) provided technical assistance and facilitated the new entity governed by the board of directors elected by the farmer shareholders from amongst themselves and managed by a professional team.

Speaking at the inauguration, Meenesh Shah, Chairman, National Dairy Development Board said, “The NDDB family looks forward every day to make dairy farmers an important source of income and bring a lasting smile on their faces. NDDB and its subsidiaries NDDB Dairy Services and Mother Dairy are helping to give a positive shape to the efforts of the minister. Nineteen farmers-owned such organisations have been formed across the country in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. These organisations collectively procure about 40 lakh litres of milk per day and so far, these organisations collectively have a turnover of Rs 5,600 crore. It has benefited more than seven lakh families, and 70 per cent are women farmers in these entities.”

Mother Dairy will provide the forward linkage to HPMPC in terms of processing and selling milk to consumers, making the facility available to the farmers throughout the year. This will play an important role in the development of the region.

He said,” HPMPC will grow impressively in coming five years and NDDB is undertaking some other schemes for dairy development in the region including 120 biogas plants in villages of Muzaffarnagar district, cluster slurry processing units for providing biogas and cooking gas to the farmers.”

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Saugata Mitra, Managing Director, NDDB Dairy Services (NDS) pointed out that the initiative of MPCs (milk producer companies) also focuses on the empowerment of rural women. NDS came into existence in 2009 for helping milk farmers create their own entities for enhancing milk production and productivity by ensuring an infrastructure for cattle feed and area-specific mineral mixture besides artificial insemination and other developed technologies. Our goal is to bring about a social change in rural India along with substantive contribution for economic upliftment by raising the income levels of each dairy family.”

India hosts 1st Plant Based Foods Summit in New Delhi https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/06/03/india-hosts-1st-plant-based-foods-summit-in-new-delhi/ https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/06/03/india-hosts-1st-plant-based-foods-summit-in-new-delhi/#respond Fri, 03 Jun 2022 11:05:26 +0000 http://3.39.254.188/?p=2273 The aim of the summit was to offer strategic opportunities to the players in the plant-based foods industry and facilitate a platform for conversations surrounding the existing concerns facing the industry. Prahlad Singh Patel, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti inaugurated India’s 1st Plant Based Foods Summit supported by Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India (MoFPI) and Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The Summit was organised by Plant Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA) in partnership with Good Food Institute India (GFI India), today in New Delhi.

Dr Sudhanshu, Secretary – APEDA released the white position paper ’The Dawn of a Plant-Based Age – India to lead the way to world food security and nutrition’ during the summit. Addressing the summit, Prahlad Singh Patel said, “It is indeed momentous that MoFPI, APEDA and PBFIA have come together to organise India’s 1st Plant Based Foods Summit. I am delighted at the grand success of this event with participation from across stakeholders who are extremely beneficial to us; we are here to bring about a new revolution. Today, we are all gathered here to discuss world-changing ideas. As promised, I will extend my full support to build a strong plant-based foods industry in India as it’s of personal interest to me.”

“On the other hand, I also believe everyone is free to make their own choices when it comes to food. Therefore, the focus is not forcing people to give up their old food choices but on providing them with better plant-based alternatives with no compromise on taste. We have the exact capacity to bring about such a radical shift in the world. By minimising compliance, we can quickly develop this industry. I am urging the need to develop the scientific parameters and supply chains that will allow us to showcase the Indian cuisine culture that has represented us for centuries,” the minister said. The minister concluded the session with product tasting showcased by over 40 startups in the plant-based food industry such as Kerry, GoodDot, Blue Tribe Foods, Wakao Foods, OneGood among others. The summit also saw participation from ITC India, Unilever, Symrise, Symega, Buhler India, Mother Dairy, Epigamia, Kerry and Roquette.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Sudhanshu, Secretary – APEDA said, “We are all aware that the plant food business is on its way to reaching a significant degree of growth and emphasis, as seen in recent years both internationally and in India. Food is a customer’s choice; it is up to the consumer to decide what he wants to eat. Though awareness is crucial, since it influences the consumer’s decision, and the consumer’s choice determines the market’s demand. Whether it’s a domestic or foreign market, the decision determines the market’s demand.”

“Our country is fortunate to be able to generate everything needed in the food processing and agriculture industries, including labour, raw materials, and expertise. We have a food surplus in all commodities, which is the country’s strength. Because of our strength, we have been able to develop a presence in the worldwide market, which has resulted in a significant alteration in the home market. Because of the abundance of raw materials and personnel, there is a huge potential for investment prospects,” Dr Sudhanshu added.

Sanjay Sethi, Executive Director – PBFIA said, “We appreciate the guidance and support from Prahlad Singh Patel, and look forward to the opportunity to lead this critical task force to advance the role plant-based foods can play in India and on a global scale. We are extremely overwhelmed with the tremendous response and success of India’s first plant-based food summit organised by PBFIA along with MoFPI, APEDA and GFI.”

As a pre-cursor to the summit, International Coalition of Plant Based Food Organizations came together in support of global expansion and collaboration. Members of the International Plant Based Foods Working Group (IPBFWG) convened to plan for an ambitious global strategy. With international momentum for plant-based foods at an all-time high, the IPBFWG’s meeting signalled the start of a new generation of support and international collaboration to bring about a sustainable future where plant-based foods are accessible to all.

The white position paper, sponsored and developed in partnership with PBFA, provides insights and an overview of the global plant-based foods market and potential opportunities, which will enable India to lead the way to global food security and nutrition. This PBFIA flagship publication aims to raise awareness among Indian policymakers about the need to support the nascent and expanding plant-based foods sector in India.

Backed by the support of Prahlad Singh Patel and the international community, PBFIA hopes to create a joint task force united by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, APEDA, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). To achieve crucial goals that will ensure India can capitalise on the exponential potential of the plant-based foods sector.

As progress to expand the plant-based food sector in India grows, representatives from the PBFA and IPBFWG look forward to working alongside PBFIA, providing strategic support to bring about a sustainable future where plant-based foods are accessible to all.

This was a unique event in many ways – i) inviting food scientists to collaborate with young startups, ii) cooperation with the Plant Based Foods Association of the USA, with their CEO Rachel Dreskin and Chairperson of the Board Nicole Sopko also participated the summit and iii) plant-based food startups coming forward to communicate through their product tastings.

The aim of this summit was to offer strategic opportunities to the players in the plant-based foods industry and facilitate a platform for networking that elicits conversations surrounding the market size, emerging technologies, existing concerns facing the industry, and contributions leaders in powerful positions can make. The summit facilitated the tasting of plant-based foods products during the conference time as well as in the afternoon business-to-business meetings.

Farm to Plate, Esearass partner to provide global consumers quality seafood with greater traceability https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/05/03/farm-to-plate-esearass-partner-to-provide-global-consumers-quality-seafood-with-greater-traceability/ https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/05/03/farm-to-plate-esearass-partner-to-provide-global-consumers-quality-seafood-with-greater-traceability/#respond Tue, 03 May 2022 09:27:15 +0000 http://3.39.254.188/?p=2222 The partnership also seeks to establish a seafood stock exchange where local and foreign investors can invest capital for these farmers to build better facilities and produce higher quality seafood.

Farm to Plate, a blockchain-based SaaS solution for the food industry, today announced its strategic partnership with Esearass, a leading provider of seafood, across the Indian market, to enable seafood traceability, sustainable underwater ecosystems, financial emancipation and enhanced customer satisfaction using blockchain technology. By 2030, the world’s population will require 232 million metric tonnes (MT) of seafood, around 62 million MT more than the planet is expected to produce unless bold steps are taken, according to international research organisation World Fish Center.

“Clear visibility of demand ensures that suppliers can know when and how much to procure, enabling a near real-time seafood supply chain and providing consumers with fresh stock when they need it. Throw in micro tipping into the mix and you get a nexus between consumers and fishermen like never before,” said Saptarshi Choudhury, Director of Emerging Technology at Farm to Plate. “With immutable, end to end track and trace and secure financial payment integration on the blockchain we can enable a secure marketplace environment that eliminates the need for intermediaries,” Choudhury added.

“With Farm to Plate as our partner, we can provide a more secure marketplace for fish farmers to sell their produce at the best available price and gain direct remuneration through a QR code-driven payment interface. We hope to bring financial emancipation to fishermen and provide consumers with the verifiable quality and trust they deserve,” Suvo Sircar, Co-founder, Esearass said.

Along with enabling sustainability in the producer ecosystem, the Farm to Plate platform offers End to end track and trace from farmer to consumer, Microtipping, Modular design, Single window for all stakeholders to view supply chain data, Two-factor authentication and authorisation, Seamless onboarding, Easy transfer of data, Identity and access management for role allocation and Publicly accessible URL through a QR code.

The partnership also seeks to establish a seafood stock exchange where local and foreign investors can invest capital for these farmers to build better facilities and produce higher quality seafood. The company is currently investigating AI-based options to track the freshness index of seafood, so implementing blockchain technology is perhaps the logical step forward.

“Esearass’s vision is in line with our corporate philosophy to build sustainable ecosystems while ensuring equitable benefits for all. The success of this partnership will enable consumers in the United States and other countries to gain access to exotic seafood supplies that are compliant with industry norms and give trusted traceability and assured quality, even for foods sourced from developing economies,” said, Pramod Sajja, CEO and President, Paramount Software Solutions.

India’s sugar exports reach all time high in USD terms, know the figures… https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/05/02/indias-sugar-exports-reach-all-time-high-in-usd-terms-know-the-figures/ https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/05/02/indias-sugar-exports-reach-all-time-high-in-usd-terms-know-the-figures/#respond Mon, 02 May 2022 10:35:58 +0000 http://3.39.254.188/?p=2204 India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer after Brazil. Since 2010-11, India has consistently produced surplus sugar, comfortably exceeding the domestic requirements.

India’s sugar exports witnessed an astounding growth of 291 per cent from USD 1,177 million in FY 2013-14 to USD 4600 million in FY 2021-22. As per DGCIS (Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics) data, India exported sugar to 121 countries across the globe.

Sugar export jumped 65 per cent in 2021-22 corresponding to the previous year. The growth was achieved despite logistical challenges posed by Covid-19 pandemic in the form of high freight rates and container shortages. Highlighting the historic achievement in a tweet, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, Piyush Goyal said that Modi government’s policies were helping farmers increase their income by tapping global markets.

According to the DGCIS data, India had exported sugar worth of USD 1965 million in 2019-20, which rose to USD 2790 million in 2020-21 and USD 4600 million in 2021-22. Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, in 2021-22 (April-February), India has exported sugar worth of USD 769 million to Indonesia, followed by Bangladesh (USD 561 million), Sudan (USD 530 million) and UAE (USD 270 million). India also exported sugar to Somalia, Saudi Arab, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Nepal, China among other countries. Indian sweetener has also been imported by USA, Singapore, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Germany, France, New Zealand, Denmark, Israel, Russia, Egypt among various other countries.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka account for nearly 80 per cent of the total sugar production in the country. The other major sugarcane-producing states are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Haryana and Punjab. Notably, India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer after Brazil. Since 2010-11, India has consistently produced surplus sugar, comfortably exceeding the domestic requirements. The record exports would enable the sugar producers to reduce their stocks and would also benefit the sugarcane farmers, as the increased demand for Indian sugar is likely to improve their realisations.

Hesston by Massey Ferguson launches new self-propelled windrower https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/04/14/hesston-by-massey-ferguson-launches-new-self-propelled-windrower/ https://theagriculturetimes.com/2022/04/14/hesston-by-massey-ferguson-launches-new-self-propelled-windrower/#respond Thu, 14 Apr 2022 14:31:34 +0000 http://3.39.254.188/?p=2188 The new WR Series also offers some of Massey Ferguson’s most cutting-edge technology for increased efficiency and a comfortable ride. DULUTH, GA, USA – AGCO Corporation, a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of agricultural machinery and precision agriculture technology, today introduced a new self-propelled windrower from Hesston by Massey Ferguson that provides hay farmers more uptime, more power, and more comfort. The new WR Series windrower will debut at the AGCO booth during World Ag Expo in Tulare, CA, on February 8-10, 2022.

The WR Series windrower offers a 10 per cent increase over previous models in overall efficiency to provide the power and speed to maximise hay production and quality. User-friendly features reduce the stress and fatigue brought on by long days in the field, while advanced smart farming technology helps minimise the overall carbon footprint for West Coast hay and livestock operations. “When it comes to high-quality hay, every hour counts,” said Matt LeCroy, marketing director, Hay & Forage North America, AGCO Corporation. “Massey Ferguson customers rely on the straightforward and dependable nature of their equipment to efficiently accomplish work across their farms. The new WR Series windrower allows them to maximise their time in the field with minimised impact on the environment all while riding in one of the most comfortable high-tech cabs on the market.”

At the heart of the new WR Series design is a closed centre auxiliary hydraulic system. Depending on the application, this feature allows for a 10 per cent fuel reduction or 10 per cent available power increase. This boost in overall efficiency is paired with a 150-gallon fuel tank capacity — an increase over previous models — for greater uptime and productivity. For added performance and sustainability, the new WR Series features AGCO Power engines, delivering up to 265 HP at 2100 RPM and more than 280 HP at 1950 RPM. These highly dependable and cost-effective engines offer a proven legacy of consistency, reliability, fuel savings and increased efficiency. The WR197 features a 4.9-liter, 4-cylinder while the WR235 and WR265 are equipped with a 7.4-liter, 6-cylinder engine. A large tandem hydraulic header drive pump offers increased hydraulic capacity and control, allowing producers to run disc or draper heads. This provides higher productivity, faster field speeds, and better performance in all field conditions.

Cutting-edge technologies for improved efficiencies and comfort

The new WR Series also offers some of Massey Ferguson’s most cutting-edge technology for increased efficiency and a comfortable ride. The Datatronic 5 terminal collects all vital operations in one convenient place and provides an intuitive interface for increased productivity and ease of use. This system allows for individual operator profiles, making it easy to customise operational preferences. Producers can also use MF Guide and other smart farming technologies for more economical operations. This system reduces overlaps and can save up to 12 per cent fuel in field operations. The spacious, ergonomically inspired Vision Cab with high visibility, rounded front windshield and tinted rear glass provides an unobstructed view for operation and transport. A suspended rear axle — the oscillating GlideRider — absorbs bounce and shock for increased operator comfort. Paired with the optional Opti Air four-point airbag suspension, producers can experience one of the smoothest rides available.
