After the UAE, New Zealand became the second foreign country to engage with the J&K administration on February 9, promising to support the Union Territory “in doubling produce in the farming sector.”
A Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was signed by the J&K government “for improving the sheep farming sector in the UT.” J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha presided over the virtual signing ceremony with Mischa Mannix-Opie, Executive Director, New Zealand G2G, at the Raj Bhavan.
Ralph Hays, New Zealand Trade Commissioner for South Asia; Ruby Jaspreet, Director Oceania; and Erin Mehar, Commercial Manager G2G, all attended the MoC signing ceremony.
“The alliance aims to double production in the next three years, with a significant increase in the quality of livestock products, wool production, and the introduction of processing facilities and value addition to raise income and benefits to Jammu Kashmir,” said L-G Sinha.
He said that the J&K government was establishing an enabling environment for the integrated expansion of the cattle sector, which supports 1.2 million families and contributes 5% of the Union Territory’s GDP.
The L-G stated that it will increase mutton production, add value to livestock products, create capacity, transfer technology, and provide more education and training in J&K for the benefit, welfare, and prosperity of current and future generations.
“The MoC’s overarching goal was to improve farmer pay, technological transfer, marketing, and value addition of J&K sheep products,” according to the L-G.
He stated that New Zealand is a vital partner in India’s growing global connection. “We appreciate our ties not only because of strong bonds and cultural affinities, but also because of a mature awareness of our strategic convergences, global interests, and economic potential,” the L-G added.
Mr. Sinha stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand share a desire to promote democratic, peaceful, and prosperous goals for the people.
“Despite the turbulence of global pandemic events over the previous two years, the India-New Zealand relationship has maintained a near-seamless continuity,” stated the Lt. Governor.
The well-known public sector institution New Zealand G2G is also collaborating with other Indian states to utilise experience and solutions for long-term development.
“Both countries’ leaders believe in the enormous potential of our economic and commercial cooperation. We are committed to fostering conditions that will allow this collaboration to expand quickly. “I am certain that this cooperation agreement between New Zealand G2G and J&K is only the beginning of our relationship’s future extending and strengthening,” the Lt. Governor stated.
