The Indian government issued its Agriculture Export Policy in December 2018, instructing state governments to create their own. As a result, the state administration formed a committee to develop the policy in May 2019.

The Maharashtra government unveiled the state’s Agriculture Export Policy (AEP) on Friday, which will encourage the export of 21 agricultural products.

Anoop Kumar, Maharashtra’s chief secretary (Cooperation and Marketing), met with agricultural export chain stakeholders. “Exports must be prioritised because they can help farmers increase their net income by 40 to 45 percent. Farmers’ earnings from the domestic market are unlikely to be remunerative.”

According to Kumar, the main issue for foreign buyers of state goods is the state’s rapid changes in export policy, which reduces the trustworthiness of Indian exporters. “Because it takes a long time to recoup clients, the central government should avoid interfering with the export chain. We have lost faith in the global market, which is hurting farmers.”

Suraj Mandhare, the district collector of Nashik, which has a large onion export cluster, emphasised the inconsistencies in India’s onion export policies over the last decade. “Between December 2010 and December 2020, India imposed the minimum export price (ME), a legally enforceable floor price on exporters 34 times. During the same time period, export was restricted four times “Mandhare made a remark.
